Quail Run's vision is to help students reach their social and emotional potential. We celebrate our similarities and differences in a nurturing, safe, welcoming environment and collaborate amongst one another in our positive learning community. Rainbow Room

"Building social skills and self-confidence in chldren in grades K-3"

The Rainbow Program at Quail Run is part of a statewide, research based program that uses small group and one on one sessions with children to teach empathy, social problem solving, and emotion management. These social skills are the building blocks for relationship building - skills that boost self-esteem, skills that teach self-control, skills that help children feel more confident in their surroundings and in their interactions with others. Children may benefit from the Rainbow Progam because of new school adjustment, academic pressures, peer pressures, excessive shyness, divorce, and many other reasons. The Second Step curriculum is used in the small group setting. Nondirective play is the research based approach used in the one on one sessions. Referrals to the Rainbow Program can come from teacher recommendations or parent requests. There are two twelve week sessions, one in the fall and one in the spring. For further information contact Debbie Roof, school psychologist and Rainbow Project Coordinator, at droof@srvusd.net.

Second Step

Second Step is a research-based program that is being taught by K-5 teachers in the classroom throughout the San Ramon Valley Unified School District. It is a social skills curriculum, with one kit per grade level. Teachers shows students a black and white photographic card with each weekly lesson. There is a story about what is happening on the card, and questions to ask the students, followed by role playing. Children pretend to be detectives looking for clues as they learn how to identify their own feelings, the feelings of others, and to solve social problems in a caring way. Specific steps are taught for managing strong emotions, such as think calming thoughts, take deep breaths and count backwards. Puppets, videos and songs are all part of the fun in learning new social skills. For more information check out the Committee for Children website at http://www.cfchildren.org/ or contact the district Second Step teacher trainer, Debbie Roof, at droof@srvusd.net.
